Thing 5

The reader is great to find relevant current events in art…I could see us using a subscription to a  feed as a weekly discussion in art I class…it would keep students interested in projects that they are working on. It will also help to integrate new technologies into their daily lives. I will be using this next year in one class and see how it goes.

Videosharing

It was very easy to find things on youtube. I found two very good videos about art. My how to video was on creating faux finishes on painted surfaces…we are getting ready to do that in our new bakery..TODAY; and the nostalgic one was about Mr. Bingle a New Orleans icon from my childhood. I didn’t quite realize how useful YouTube could be in my classroom. I think we just might use it a bit more.

Thing 18- Pod-casting

I have taken a course in podcasting, but this time around it was much easier….maybe the changes in technology have helped. I really think I could pull this off with my class. AP Art History could benefit from having a study guide that could be portable. I would like to see the podcasts used to help students who learn by hearing the information. They can make a podcast, learn from preparing the information, then replay the information…..I can’t see a better way to do this than podcasting…….if I can just figure out the images thing!!!!!

Thing 23

Wow, what a class. There have been so many discoveries along the way….sometimes happily received and other times kicking and fighting the entire way. There are so many options for the classroom. The next steps are to implement at least 2 things into next years classes. AP art history is always a great place to use technology and to test out different places to house the content of our class….it is so great to have a single resource where students can go and get what they need…..they can access this warehouse from anywhere….isn’t that cool (who would have ever thought that even just a few years ago). I think I will play around with social networks and find a home for us….this year we used google pages since we began using this as our school email. I think we can take it a step further. And then to share with other schools or students who are also taking AP art history……wow!! My studio art classes will begin with Creative Commons and Flickr slide shows like we did in this course. No need to change the task much….they will be able to gain lots from thinking through a theme. I would recommend this course to anyone….even people who don’t teach!!!

Thing 11

526343918_40f39b7ae9_b526343918_40f39b7ae9_b This was one of the photos I used in my slideshow.

Flickr could be very useful…themes are what we use in art. To be able to explore a theme through visuals before we begin a piece of artwork, should really help the students. We already pull images from the internet for art projects, but this is a great way to employ the internet and images into a finished project….even before they produce something with classical art mediums.

Thing 13-Video Conference

Googlios: A 21st – Century Approach to Teaching, Learning, & Assessment

This was a very interesting session. For the first time, our school is using Google Apps as it’s email and document sharing platform. It has been quite a year with the transition to Google. As I have said in an earlier post, I thought I knew most of what was needed for Google, but wow, there is so much more. This session helps to go through how things have changed and how we can apply this to authentic assessments. I have to say there were parts that were very boring..the guys monotone voice made it less like a regular conference session and more like a podcast (which can be a bit dry sometimes depending on the speaker). Weeding through the information, there are gems to be found. I think there is good stuff here and would like to “attend” the next round of sessions.

Thing 22

I enjoyed looking around Classroom 2.0 and around a network called Art Education 2.0 and I actually signed up to the art network. I see lots of ways to integrate the web networks into learning. The very first thing is that our school should set up a network to help the teachers. Some of the teachers we have may be overwhelmed by what it available, but if we could have a single resource for those teachers and a springboard site for the others, I think we would be much more certain of success at integrating more web 2.0 ideas into our everyday education. For students I see great potential to add this into almost any subject. They not only learn about networking and computer skills, but they also learn about what ever task or subject the teacher generates. They learn not only the subject material but the bonus is another way to come to the answers.

Thing 21-Flakey

Pageflakes did remind me of a homepage thing I had once done with google where you could add widgets….this is much cooler and the stuff you can add is limitless….like our gmail accounts, there is a reader for RSS feeds…..again the issue will be which one do you use and how to use what you have. I don’t quite see how I can use it in class…..yes, I could have students get “fresh” information daily, but I haven’t yet discovered the other uses. It is amazing that all of this stuff is out there, but that I didn’t know existed!

Thing 20

Well, I thought I knew about GoogleDocs since we have been using them at school this year, but I didn’t know a thing. I use Google Docs to collect class assignments in art history class, but we have never collaboratively worked on a doc together. Our school is in the process of self-study and re-accrediation and we have used google docs to work on our reports. I have not fully thought through the impact of using this tool in the classroom. This one assignment will serve as a study guide for the Modern period for my class….and they produced it. I played around with forms…WOW. I didn’t even realize that was there. There is so much stuff right there to use……I will begin to use the forms for my end of the year class poll….I ususally have the kids fill out the information and read it  (very helpful stuff) they file them away and don’t really look at the data again. The forms spit out into a spreadsheet can be tracked from year to year to see if how I present the material effects the outcome on the AP exam. THANKS!!!!

I didn’t realize how useful YouTube could be. I found two very good art videos. I think I will try to use this tool more often in class…..some of the things are very informative and for the nostalgia piece students could use this to generate a piece of art about themselves…looking at childhood memories could make a very engaging work of art. For my how to piece, I chose faux finishes on painted surfaces….we are getting ready to do this in our new bakery, today, so it is very timely.
